Robot Hustle is an American DJ based in San Francisco. Most of the time, he goes by the proper name “Robert” and he specializes in rare dance oddities while heavily under the influence of DIY electronics. The bleep bloop melodies of the early Warp sounds from the 90s mystified him, while the Cybernetic Broadcasting System (CBS – RIP) enchanted him with the Italo and proto house sounds of the early eighties. One day, while listening to CBS radio, a track by Alaska y Pegamoides from España was heard. Inspired, Robot decide to start a club named Bailando. After a few months’ run he caught the attention of local San Francisco illusionist Juanita More and was whisked away to The Stud for a DJ residency. Over the span of his career he bonded with the boys of Honey Soundsystem (circa 2007) after an initial meeting with Pee Play breaking bread at a living room rave. Together, Honey + Robot began promoting several underground parties including the following: an April 20th event that involved a pole worker (Bad AZZ); a bathhouse party at an abandoned sex club; and the Mindshaft basement events that consisted of two parties: a tribute to Megatone Records and a literary inspired club based on the events in Dancer from the Dance. After a run of more parties in deserts, campgrounds, and poolsides full of sauntering, hairy bears, Honey + Robot built a foundation for a weekly Sunday party in November 2009. A feature of this party is the various themes incorporated into the nights, including the Dark NRG Winter Solstice party hosted by Josh Cheon and Robot Hustle to celebrate the darkest night of the year. Without fail, the party has continued on even when the venue Paradise shut down due to licensing issues and we were orphaned for a few weeks. Thankfully a new home materialized in the form of a Holy Cow. As well as djing regularly with Honey he has performed alongside several talented DJs: Spun, Daniel Wang, Todd Terje, Horsemeat Disco, Jeffrey Sfire, Mvsclz, Discodromo, TLR, Cosmic Force, Beat Broker, Safety Scissors, C.L.A.W.S., Steve Fabus, Steve Summers, Bus Station John, Andy Butler of (Hercules and Love Affair), and Gavin Hardkiss. In 2010, Robot Hustle gave a sneak preview of his live show element at Honey and in 2011 will be expanding this for a highly interactive performance. The track Serengeti Drive which played recently on Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space was produced by Robot Hustle in 2010 and released on the Brotherhood Compilation by Honey Soundsystem.
