  • Scott Brandon (these days known more as Scotty Brandon) has spent nearly 3 decades immersed in the world of dance music.
A child of the late 70's, Scotty Brandon spent the 80's growing up in a Michigan town halfway between two cultural hotspots: Detroit and Ann Arbor. As a young boy his mom's record collection of new wave, R&B and club hits filled their home with rhythmic sound. After attending his first Detroit underground warehouse party in 1995 he became immediately hooked on the music and energy of the scene. With a music background as a guitar player and drummer, he quickly taught himself to mix vinyl records by ear and truly work a DJ mixer as an instrument. In just over a year, with the records he had accumulated from shops around Detroit, Ann Arbor and Chicago, he would be playing parties in famed Detroit underground venues like The Packard Plant, Timbos and The Firehouse under the name Lucid. After leaving the Detroit area for a couple of years of living and DJing in the Northeast, Scotty returned to the Detroit area in 2001. After a brief hiatus from DJing professionally, in 2003 he began working as the Marketing/PR manager at Ann Arbor dance club The Necto (formerly The Nectarine Ballroom). During this time at the Necto Scotty started his own weekly event called “Popular.” In “Popular" Scotty created a forum where in one night you could hear dance-punk, electro-clash, new wave, no wave, next wave, new romantic, italo, disco, dance classics, electro, techno, house, rock, funk, jazz; anything as long as it was danceable. “Popular” became the go-to event for discerning music fans, townies and hipsters in Ann Arbor and earned a devout regular clientele. DJ's like Felix Da Housecat and Ken Ishii guested along with numerous local DJs and tastemakers like Carlos Souffront and Jonnie O. During this time, Scotty would also become a second-wave resident at the notorious “untitled” parties thrown by Blackbx and Ghostly International putting him in the illustrious company of Matthew Dear, Mike Servito, Derek Plaslaiko, Seth Troxler, Ryan Elliot and Tadd Mullinix. He also would hold down multiple residencies in the Ann Arbor scene and play numerous underground parties and clubs both there and in Detroit including a set at the Movement festival in 2004. This period also saw the first official releases of his music by way of two appearances on Moodgadget Records; “Voyage Into The Dark” under his legal name, Scott Brandon, and “Don’t Let Go” under the name The Downtown Division. It was also around this time that Scotty began playing mainstream music sets at select locations, broadening the spectrum of his DJ repertoire to include more broadly popular music. In late 2006 Scotty moved to Chicago. During the next 12 years in the city that gave birth to house music he had multiple residencies at the world renowned dance club SmartBar while also being tapped to play underground house and techno there opening for internationally lauded DJs and Producers like Move D, Classixx, Rick Wilhite, Marcellus Pittman, The Twelves, Hot Chip, Simian Mobile Disco, Rick Wade and Funk D’Void. Outside of SmartBar he would DJ numerous one-off events and maintain multiple residencies playing both underground and popular music with the latter including an 8 year stint playing an expertly mixed blend of what he calls “party jams” (old school, hip-hop, soul, boogie, top40, indie dance cuts, and more) weekend nights at Bar Deville. In addition, his boogie, soulful house and disco Friday night at Revel Room became a neighborhood staple and he also worked with multiple clubs in the Northalsted (formerly Boystown) neighborhood such as The Lakeview Broadcasting Company, Scarlet, Berlin, 44th Ward, Cell Block and Wang’s where he played party jams, indie dance and Top40. During his time in Chicago he was a tremendous advocate for the art of vinyl DJing and supported the iconic record store Gramaphone Records through writing reviews and articles for their blog and performing for in-store sets and outside events. As a producer he also released original music and remixes under his The Cushion guise on Fresh Meat Records. He played his last set in Chicago at Queen! in SmartBar on August 13, 2018 with friends Michael Serafini, owner of Gramaphone Records, and Chicago House legend Derrick Carter. Before leaving Chicago in 2018 Scotty had mostly hung up the headphones as a way to focus on other musical outlets except for special opportunities. Now residing in Asheville, NC he still takes the opportunity to play parties and events around town here and there. Having so many diverse underground musical outputs he has used multiple aliases through the years. Each alias refers to a certain style or vibe of sound and this multiple personality approach allows him to pursue his multiple interests while setting the proper expectations for the tone of a DJ set or release. At the end of the day it’s still Scotty doing his thing, playing an eclectic blend of music while reading a room and creating a soundtrack for great nights out and its something he will always love to do.
