  • Spontaneous as they may seem, ecstatic moments in late-night warehouse parties seldom happen on accident. Only artists like Shane Fontane grasp the sorcery needed to conjure proper techno soundscapes.
Beyond the wealth of technical knowledge at his fingertips, Shane’s sonic mysticism lies in his devotion to concept. His A Deep Within imprint, for instance, derives its minimal aesthetic from ideas involving mortality and legacy. Each track casts a different spell, and in succession they shape the world around you into an a space of cinematic grandeur. Shane Fontane’s second-nature understanding of techno speaks to his decades of experience with DJing and remixing culture. Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, his earliest influences included Eazy-E and KRS-One at a time before hip-hop entered the mainstream spotlight. After watching Rob Gee deliver a set at Limelight in the early ‘90s, however, he began a lifelong descent into the rabbit hole of electronic music. As a young adult, he gradually moved on from gabber and hardcore to house and techno. He released his first music in the latter genres under the stage name Trauma before adopting his current moniker in a moment of inspiration during an all-night outing. An artist through and through, he even legally changed his name to Shane Fontane as a symbolic gesture of fully embracing his creative identity. After he relocated to San Francisco, Shane’s career as a producer picked up considerable momentum. He was involved with the 2014 launch of Funk’n Deep Records, and he collaborated with Durtysoxxx and Meezy on “Bump,” the label’s first record to receive support from artists as well respected as Carl Cox. In the beginning of 2017 Shane launched his record label, A Deep Within. He inaugurated the imprint with a new moon ritual coinciding with the release of the When We’re Gone EP, which reached #5 on Beatport’s Minimal / Deep Tech Top 10 Releases chart. The same year Magnetic Magazine wrote about a single of his titled “Under Your Spell” as part of a feature highlighting artists with their own distinctive brand of techno. Mario Ochoa included another called “Rituals” on an episode of his podcast, and other A Deep Within releases saw support from the likes of Cristian Varela, Anthony Pappa, TKNO, Tocadisco and more. When it comes to performing, Shane Fontane selects his gigs carefully. Favoring events held in stripped-down industrial spaces, he has made himself a fixture at the gatherings of Bay Area outfits like Mioli Music, Nocturnal Code and Halcyon. When you find yourself with a sheen of light perspiration on a dance floor where time and space are irrelevant, you’re likely to find Shane Fontane behind the decks. Altering your reality with each skillful selection, he tells a psychedelic story underscored by hypnotic grooves. His songs make up the soundtrack to your deepest techno dreams with a sensibility that places his discography in a category all its own. Shane Fontane has only just begun to share his artistic vision with the techno world. Follow him closely in the years to come to find out what sounds will emerge from his introspective journey.
