Jesse Kuch is label manager, A&R and DJ for Australian-based dance imprint Open Records. Born and raised in the paradise that is Tropical North Queensland, it was in his hometown of Cairns where he first stumbled across the wonders of electronic music. A classically trained pianist and life-long musician, Jesse first began toying around with DJing and production in high school, initially following his first love of hip-hop, breaks and other broken-beat styles. But it wasn’t long before this gave way to more dancefloor-oriented music, and Jesse found himself caught in the vibrant Australian electronic music culture, switching his musical focus to deep progressive, techno and house sounds. Taking his first serious gigs in 2004, Jesse hasn’t looked back since and has become a regular fixture on the Australian electronic music calendar, playing the country’s biggest clubs, parties and festivals on a regular basis. These days, the Suspekt style now sits somewhere in the grey area between progressive house, techno, tribal and tech-house – always deep and spacious, with hypnotic rhythms, tech-tribal percussion and slamming bass grooves. Complimented by slick mixing, smooth track selection and a keen ear for what the dancefloor needs to hear, Jesse manages to remain accessible while never losing touch with his roots in Australian underground dance music. Together with fellow label boss Woodsman, he has compiled two successful compilations – Slow-Release and Festivus – along with a string of digital exclusive material from both Australian and internatioanl artists, helping to establish the label as one of the country’s most respected underground dance imprints. Along the way, he has hosted radio shows, been interview in magazines and street press, played a set on Triple J radio’s MixUp (Australia’s biggest national dance music show) and shared the stage with international luminaries like Dousk, Marc Romboy, Claude VonStroke, Kasey Taylor begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting, Adam K, Charlie May, Robert Babicz, Boris Brejcha, Minilogue, Lutzenkirchen, Solead, Fiord, Perfect Stranger, Monolake and many more. All this while juggling management of the label, a newfound chronic XBox Live addiction and a full time career in the media industry! Kicking off the year with a trip to Japan to play at the Electronic Shower in Nagoya, followed by a slot at the legendary Rainbow Serpent Festival in Victoria, 2010 looks like it’s going to be busier than ever for Jesse. With a magazine to edit, a festival to promote and heaps of new Open material on the way, including his own solo compilation due for release in the second half of the year, Jesse doesn’t look like he’ll be getting a rest anytime soon.
