Like his own musical tastes, Taylor Bense’s first solo EP Caught Up draws on numerous and diverse inspiration. From jazz and MoTown, to the music of J Dilla, Madlib, James Blake and Flying Lotus, Bense has managed to take familiar sounds and repurpose them into fresh tracks with unexpected lyrical and stylistic pairings. Bense naturally gravitated to music as a kid, and made the jump from admiration to practice when he began learning to play the guitar. He excelled at the instrument and later expanded his skills to include the keyboard, piano and drums, eventually adding synthesizers and turntables to his repertoire. Just as music was innate for him, Caught Up’s separate tracks evolved organically and spontaneously into a full and well-rounded EP. What started as a creative outlet to make use of his self-built home studio in Brooklyn, NY morphed into a cohesive and powerful musical offering showcasing Bense's love of hip-hop beats and electronic music. Expressive yet upbeat, lighthearted yet emotional, and catchy without being trite, Bense has created an album that is just as appropriate to listen to on a solo stroll with headphones as it on oversized speakers. No matter how they're heard, his instrument-heavy tunes will be running through listener’s heads on repeat as his unfamiliar audience quickly becomes a group of admirers and fans.
