Black Sabbath, Crass, Grinderman, Phuture – some things sound like their name suggests they should. Weekend Express is one of these, and Melbourne producer Daniel Ooi has crafted a sound that at once suggests his namesake and provides a fast track to freedom. Heavily indebted to the past but with both feet forward, Weekend Express is an analogue trip down a highway to high times, an imaginary place where every night is a Saturday night. As a producer, Weekend Express is juicy, classic machine drums beneath timeless infinity arpeggios, ripples of sax stretching out over deep space basslines, and sampled vocal snippets that offer a sneak peak into another time in another world, all painted in a rich shade of analogue. Ooi’s first solo release as Weekend Express, the ‘Going To Chicago’ EP is perfectly at home on a label aptly from the home of house music itself, Stilove4music. In addition to the EP, he has also contributed a Weekend Express track to the first release on the Melbourne Deepcast imprint, a compilation featuring likeminded locals breeding a scene and a sound down south. As a DJ, Weekend Express is a bouncy trip through dance; from it’s New York disco origins until today, via some lengthy stays in Chicago, Detroit, Berlin and Melbourne. Having held it down in Melbourne for the last few years, the time has come for Ooi’s train to depart the station. If there’s one way to get the weekend started right, it’s only aboard the Weekend Express.
