  • Hyperdub is putting out a compilation of rare '80s and early-'90s Japanese video game music in November. Diggin In The Carts - A Collection Of Pioneering Japanese Video Game Music mines the sounds of games for classic consoles like the Famicon and Super Famicon (also known as the Nintendo and Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems), along with early Japanese computer platforms including the MSX. The compilation gets its name from a Red Bull Music Academy documentary series highlighting the composers who were part of this early era of electronic music, and Hyperdub boss Kode9 worked with Nick Dwyer, writer and co-director for the RBMA series, to research and assemble its 34 tracks. A digital and CD release for Diggin In The Carts is scheduled for November 17th, before the vinyl comes out on February 16 of next year. Highly-regarded animator Koji Morimoto (known for his work on films like Akira and The Animatrix) is behind its artwork. Kode9 and Dwyer will also take the project on an RBMA-supported tour. The shows will present a new Kode9 performance with visuals from Morimoto and a DJ set of video game tunes from Dwyer (as DITC音), along with collaborative set from longtime composers Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima. Los Angeles, Tokyo (the night of the compilation's release) and London are on the schedule, with more to be announced. Listen to one of the compilation's tunes below.
